WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (WCHS) — The Greenbrier’s casino will be able to keep operating after West Virginia Lottery officials gave it a green light Tuesday.
Debt tied to the historic resort – owned by U.S. Sen. Jim Justice and his family - has been at the center of a recent legal battle that will decide its future.
The casino’s license was set to expire Wednesday, but lottery board members consulted with an independent auditing firm which found the Justice group has more than half a billion dollars available in total assets.
The resort had been put on watch as casino’s latest financial report was late, there has been considerable turnover in its finance department and working capital is less than ideal.
Lottery officials are renewing the license with a caveat they must provide quarterly updates and reviews of finances.
“I have no reservations about recommending that they be relicensed, but I would recommend that they go on watch until they have their debt refinanced,” audit and consulting member Chris Lambert said.
The West Virginia State Tax Division stated the resort is in good standing. The resort's next report is due to auditors in September.
