Massachusetts online lottery records US$1.6 million handle on debut day

Massachusetts’ online lottery has recorded US$1.6 million in wagers from players in its first 24 hours of operation, with thousands of dollars won.

Officials recorded US$1,626,187 across both the Mass Lottery Online website and app. Among the wagers placed, the lottery also reported multiple winners – including one player who won US$1,000 in the first three hours after launch. Another player won roughly US$5,500 while playing a “lamp-themed game,” while at least five others won prizes of over US$1,000 on the first day.

“This kind of makes a couple records that we’re proud of,” said William Bracken, Executive Director of the Massachusetts State Lottery, during a commissioner’s meeting on Tuesday, as reported by Mass Live.

“We were the most robust and feature-rich program in the history of online lottery launches worldwide. In addition, we are the most successful first-day full-service online lottery launch in the country. This record also makes us the most successful online lottery launch per capita in the country,” noted the executive.

Bracken added that the majority of players using the online lottery were already signed up to the original lottery, with more than 30,000 re-verifying and another 200 new players signing up for the app.
