Louisiana Lottery Corporation Celebrates 35 Years of Reasons to Smile
BATON ROUGE - On September 6, 1991, the Louisiana Lottery released its first scratch-off game, Louisiana Treasures. Today, 35 years later, the Lottery has proved itself to be an integral part of the state's economic funding for K-12 public education.
Louisiana voters approved a constitutional amendment creating the Louisiana Lottery Corporation in 1990, leading to the organization's official beginning in 1991. From there, the Lottery introduced its flagship draw-style game, Lotto, before adding more draw-style games to its portfolio including Pick 3 and Pick 4, Easy 5, Mega Millions, and Powerball. Finally, the Lottery rounded out its portfolio of games with the addition of Fast Play in June and Pick 5 in August of 2021.
In its 35-year history, the Lottery has generated more than $14.7 billion in revenue, with much of that money being put back into Louisiana communities. In 2004, a constitutional amendment approved by voters took effect to dedicate Lottery proceeds to the Minimum Foundation Program (MFP), which funds K-12 public education in Louisiana. Since then, the Lottery has transferred over $5.1 billion to the MFP, over 35% of its revenue.
Along with funding K-12 public education in the state, the Lottery has also sponsored several professional, semi-professional, and university sports teams, festivals, and events both big and small.
"From our iconic game mascots to supporting K-12 public school funding, the Lottery has made itself synonymous with having fun and doing good," said Vice President of Marketing Quinn Dossett.
To honor its 35 years of service to the state, the Lottery produced a dynamic campaign starting with the release of its 35th anniversary family of games, including an updated version of the Louisiana Treasures scratch-off. The campaign also included second-chance cash prize drawings, social media and radio giveaways, in-store promotions and more, which can all be found on the 35th anniversary hub on the Lottery’s website at 35th Anniversary | Louisiana Lottery.
