Two Days With Nearly $1.5 Million In The Cup Holder
Winning Powerball® Waited Patiently To Deliver Some Joy
SACRAMENTO – What is in your cupholder right now? A receipt or two? Some spare change? Maybe a Powerball or a Mega Millions® slip? If it’s the last one, take note – maybe you need to scan those tickets next time you head out for something in the car.
That is how it went for Amos Tillet, who picked up $20 worth of Powerball Quick Pick® plays and then forgot about them for a couple of days. Hanging out with a friend, she asked him to get something from the car, and while he was there, he noticed the Powerball slip he’d purchased two days earlier, from the 7-Eleven at 5700 Santa Monica Blvd in Los Angeles. Bringing in the game, he sat down to scan his slip. When he got to the last scan, the number was hard to believe. He scanned it again. Then happiness set in.
“I ran around the living room and, I kind of like, fell out in joy,” laughed Tillet. His scan revealed that he’d won $1,478,686.
What made Tillet’s moment even more incredible is something he said at the counter while buying the ticket two days prior. The clerk asked him why he was only spending $20 when the jackpot was nearly $1 billion.
Tillet recalls, “I told the guy, ‘Man, I’ll be happy with a million.’ Sure enough, kind of what I ended up with.”
Not Left Out – Scratchers Winners Find $1 Million Prizes Too
The draw games bring big jackpots, but plenty of Scratchers® winners find those $1,000,000 top prizes as well. Players like:
- David Sandoval Quezada, who won $1 million playing Neon Jackpot Scratchers. Their winning ticket was purchased at Pioneer Market, located at 465 S. Brand Blvd. in San Fernando.
- Cinthia Hernandez, who also won $1 million playing Neon Jackpot with a winning ticket purchased from the Chevron located at 22 Rowland Way in Novato.
Every Play, Schools Win
While these life-changing wins are exciting, they’re also part of something even bigger. Every ticket sold supports California’s public schools, providing extra funding for everything from classroom materials and new technology to career training programs. The mission of the California Lottery is to raise additional funding for public education, helping to supplement school budgets for K-12 as well as colleges and universities. The California Lottery has raised more than $48 billion for public schools through the responsible sale of its games since 1985. Lottery funding for schools is largely discretionary, so administrators and educators can use Lottery money for instructional programs and services they may not otherwise afford. The California Lottery features eight draw games and dozens of new instant Scratchers games each year. More than 95% of California Lottery sales revenue goes back to the community in the form of prize payments, retailer commissions and bonuses, and contributions to education. More information about who benefits can be found here. As jackpots rise, the California Lottery would like to remind players that gambling should be fun. Borrowing money to play, spending above a person’s budget, or using money intended for other purposes can ultimately lead to significant problems for players and their families. If a player recognizes that they have a gambling problem or if someone knows of someone who may have a problem, the Lottery recommends calling the California Problem Gambling Help Line at 1-800-GAMBLER.
