Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds appointed Stephen Waymire as the new administrator of the Iowa Lottery

Waymire, who has served on the Iowa Lottery’s executive team since 2022, has 30 years of law enforcement experience with the Des Moines Police Department, according to a governor’s office news release. Former Iowa Lottery CEO Matt Strawn resigned in May and is now president and CEO of  Strategic America, a marketing and communications firm in West Des Moines.

 “I appreciate the opportunity to lead this outstanding organization and work with our exceptional employees,” Waymire said in the release. “We will continue to uphold the strong traditions of the Lottery, providing entertainment to Iowans and responsibly maximizing revenues for vital state causes while operating under a core promise of integrity, security and accountability.”  

Reynolds said Waymire’s experience in law enforcement and as a lottery executive will be a positive for the division.

“I’m pleased to appoint Stephen Waymire to lead the Iowa Lottery as its new Administrator,” Reynolds said in a news release. “Steve brings outstanding leadership and extensive firsthand knowledge of the organization’s operations. His deep commitment to accountability and long record of public service will strengthen the Lottery’s mission and support its continued success for Iowans.”  

Dana Wingert, the chair of the Iowa Lottery Commission, said in the release the division has “complete confidence” in Waymire to serve as the lottery’s administrator.

“Stephen Waymire has shown consistent leadership throughout his professional career, to include his years of experience leading security for the Iowa Lottery,” Wingert, former Des Moines police chief, said.
