The Dutch Lottery has reached a significant milestone after providing over €1.5bn to different areas of society since it was formed in 2016

The Dutch Lottery has reached a significant milestone after providing over €1.5bn to different areas of society since it was formed in 2016.

As the largest gambling provider in the Netherlands, its contribution for 2024 alone totalled €203.6m. Across the full year, the organisation supported 79 sports associations under the NOC*NSF banner by providing the organisation with €54.6m, as well as 18 charities linked to Stichting Aanwending Loterijgelden Nederland working in fields of health, exercise and wellbeing with €20.7m. The state also gained €128.3m.

Arjan Blok, CEO of the Dutch Lottery, stated: “I am proud of our impressive contribution to society. Since the foundation of the Dutch Lottery, we have been able to give back more than one and a half billion euros to society.

“This year we can contribute no less than €203.6m, a record amount. As a supporter of recreational sports, TeamNL, social activities and health initiatives, we get the Netherlands moving. Our players also contribute to this; by participating in our games, they have a chance to win great cash prizes and they support Dutch sports, 18 charities and society.”

The Netherlands’ lottery operator has also advocated for a freeze on gambling tax to further grow yearly financial support for sports, charities and society from Dutch Lottery profits by increasing annual contributions.

It is important to note that in total, the Dutch Lottery pays out more than €5.3bn in prize money, a payout percentage of 88.3%.

Blok added on the latest data: “We do this by renewing our games and working even more efficiently. But the increase in gambling tax – year after year – is hitting sports hard. Just like the VAT increase on sports, this tax increase must also be scrapped.

“Soon, a total of around €50m of our contribution will go directly to the Tax Authorities. Money that is intended for society, of which around €15m to stimulate sports and exercise in the Netherlands. Especially now that sports desperately need our structural financial support.

“Therefore, freeze the gambling tax, so that we can first map out the consequences of the increase,” concluded Blok.

The Dutch Lottery CEO also provided further insights into the government’s recent decision to keep Nederlandse Loterij as a state-owned company.

“We want to be the most responsible gambling provider,” he said. “We can become and remain that way if we can structurally measure ourselves against international competitors on the Dutch market for lotteries and online gambling.

“It is precisely in order to be able to maintain our position as the most responsible provider that Nederlandse Loterij is in favour of independence. That is why it is good that the government is re-evaluating the shareholding in Nederlandse Loterij in the long term.”
