China Lottery sales decrease by 2% in August

Sales in August reached CNY53.4bn (US$7.48bn).

China.- The Ministry of Finance has reported that Chinese lottery ticket sales reached CNY53.4bn (US$7.48bn) in August. That’s a decrease of 1.8 per cent in year-on-year terms but a rise of 2.81 per cent sequentially. Authorities attributed the decrease to the impact of the Paris Olympics in the same period last year.

Welfare Lottery sales totalled CNY17.2bn (US$2.41bn), down 2.6 per cent year-on-year, while sports lottery sales amounted to CNY36.12bn (US$5.06bn), down 1.4 per cent. Digital lottery sales reached CNY15.04bn (US$2.11bn), up 1.9 per cent.

Guessing lottery sales were CNY23.911bn (US$3.35bn), down 12.7 per cent, instant lottery sales CNY10.721bn (US$1.5bn), up 29.2 per cent, and Keno lottery sales CNY3.726bn (US$0.52bn), down 5.4 per cent.

Sales of lotto digital, guessing, instant, and Keno lottery tickets accounted for 28.1 per cent, 44.8 per cent, 20.1 per cent and 7 per cent of sales respectively. Sales increased in 15 provinces. Xinjiang, Hebei, and Shandong saw the largest increases. Sales declined in 16 provinces, with Zhejiang, Jiangxi, and Hunan experiencing the largest year-on-year decreases. 

Cumulatively, Chinese lottery sales for the first eight months of the year were up 1.4 per cent year-on-year at CNY423.2bn (US$59.28bn). Welfare lottery sales totalled CNY142.3bn (US$19.93bn), up 1.4 per cent and sports lottery sales CNY280.8bn (US$39.33bn), up 1.4 per cent.

Sales of digital lottery numbers were down 0.2 per cent at CNY119.5bn (US$16.74bn). The sales of lottery guessing reached CNY186bn (US$26.05bn), down 1.8 per cent; instant lottery CNY89.6bn (US$12.55bn), down 1.8 per cent; and Keno lottery CNY27.8bn (US$3.89bn), down 2.4 per cent.
