The UN office in Mexico held a ceremony Thursday, October 16, to unveil the ticket for the National Lottery's Grand Drawing No. 2862, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.
Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights Enrique Ochoa, National Lottery Director General Olivia Salomón, and UN Mexico Resident Coordinator Peter Grohmann led the ceremony. Artist Santiago Savi, who created the ticket's design, participated via video message.
The lottery ticket marks eight decades of multilateral work advancing peace, human rights, and sustainable development with the theme "Building Our Future Together: 80 Years of Mexico in the UN and the UN in Mexico."
Representing Foreign Affairs Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente, Undersecretary Ochoa praised the choice of Mixtec artist Santiago Savi to design the ticket, saying it "showcases Mexico's multicultural and multiethnic richness." “Mexico honors both the birth of an essential institution for peace, development, and human rights worldwide and eight decades of the UN's work in Mexico to achieve a more inclusive, safe, sustainable, resilient, and prosperous country," he said.
Resident Coordinator Peter Grohmann noted that 80 years ago, the UN Charter set a new course for humanity through cooperation, dialogue, and peace. The document's opening words—"We the peoples of the United Nations"—"remind us that this Organization's ultimate purpose is upholding its principles in people's lives: peace, equality, dignity, human rights, and sustainable development that leaves no one behind."
Director Olivia Salomón said the National Lottery issued the ticket to mark the 80th anniversary of one of the most important institutions in contemporary history—an organization that represents a common cause for finding joint solutions to major global challenges. Unveiling the commemorative ticket is an emblem and a way to honor the peace, cooperation, and hope the UN represents, she added.
She noted that the National Lottery, at 255 years old, is part of the government of Mexico's first woman president, Claudia Sheinbaum, who has handled international challenges with intelligence and sensitivity, firmly defended sovereignty while protecting the migrant community, and reaffirming that cooperation is a powerful tool for transforming realities. Director Salomón added: "Each ticket will travel throughout Mexico as a living tribute, bringing to every corner of the country the legacy and values the UN represents: peace, justice, and cooperation among nations."
The ticket symbolizes the shared history of Mexico and the UN and features a Mexican dove of peace carrying a laurel branch in its beak—a design inspired by Ñuu Savi Mixtec tradition and created by artist Santiago Savi. "My art comes from the land, from the milpa, from textiles and the nahuales (shape shifters) my Mixtec grandparents taught me about," he said. "I wanted the ticket to connect our roots with the universal values that unite us, calling for us to build a future with peace and in harmony with the planet."
The design pays tribute to the shared history between Mexico and the UN and to collective efforts building a more equitable and peaceful future. As one of 51 founding states, Mexico has maintained a firm commitment to the Organization's principles through active participation in peace and security, human rights, and sustainable development.
A Message of Hope
The anniversary comes amid global crises and growing inequalities that have weakened trust in international institutions.
Yet eight decades after its founding, the UN remains the only forum where all countries meet to dialogue, cooperate, and address challenges no country can solve alone.
International cooperation through the UN has eradicated smallpox, restored the ozone layer, and prevented a third world war. Today the UN assists more than 130 million displaced people worldwide, delivers food to more than 120 million, and supplies vaccines to nearly half the world's children.
"Its mission not only remains relevant—today it is more urgent than ever," Peter Grohmann said. He added: "We are deeply pleased that on every street corner in the country, in markets, in small shops, and in thousands of hands, this ticket tells a story of cooperation and carries a message of hope."
Officials invited the public to buy many lottery tickets, reflect on what has been built over the past 80 years, and renew their collective commitment to a future of peace, equality, and wellbeing for all.
The ceremony brought together dignitaries celebrating this joint tribute as part of activities marking the United Nations' 80th anniversary. View the program here.
