ATLANTA, Ga. — Since it was established in 1993, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has donated proceeds from the state’s various lotteries to educational programs — and those contributions recently reached the $30 billion mark.
The money funds Georgia’s pre-k program, the Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally (HOPE) Scholarship and other grants that help students attend in-state colleges.
To date, more than 2 million students have received a HOPE scholarship, while another 2 million have enrolled in the pre-kindergarten program.
During the University of Georgia-Georgia Tech rivalry game at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium last Friday, Gov. Brian Kemp and the presidents of both universities were presented a ceremonial $30 billion check by officials from the Georgia Lottery Corporation to celebrate the achievement.
In a statement, Kemp congratulated the lottery on its milestone.
“Since 1993, Georgia students from Pre-K to college have been set up for success through the programs funded by the lottery, expanding access to high-quality education in our state,” he said. “We look forward to seeing that legacy of impact continue for years to come.”
