Danish lottery revenues exceeded €455m in 2024
Danish state lottery revenue grew for the 11th consecutive year according to the latest figures from the gambling regulator, Spillemyndigheden.
Gross gaming revenue from monopoly lotteries, run by the state-owned Danske Spil lottery, hit DKK 3.4bn (€455.1m) in 2024, up from DKK 3.2bn the year prior.
This was spread across lotto games, which accounted for 78.3% of state lottery GGR with DKK 2.75bn; class lotteries, accounting for 11.6% at DKK 362m; and both online and offline scratchcards, accounting for 9.3% at DKK 301m.
The data comes ahead of a widespread ban on gambling advertising being announced by the Danish government earlier this year, with plans for the ban to begin coming into effect in early 2026 with full implementation by 2027.
Danske Spil – the state lottery operator mentioned above which also runs sports betting and casino operations though against private competitors in these latter cases – has welcomed the incoming ad ban.
“It is both good and important that this new agreement raises the bar for responsibility,” said Danske Spil CEO, Nikolas Lyhne–Knudsen. “The ambition to protect our young people is one we share and have already made a special effort toward.”
Aside from monopoly lotteries, the charity lottery sector continued to perform well during 2024, with revenue up from DKK 257m in 2023 to DKK 288m last year. The regulator has also offered a glimpse into what functions charity lotteries perform in Denmark.
Charity lotteries largely focus on healthcare, according to Spillemyndigheden. The majority focus on treatment of disease, 47% to be precise. This is followed by humanitarian causes at 35%, sports at 6% and culture at 3%, with the remaining 10% spread across various other sectors and causes.
Overall, gambling in Denmark remains a valuable part of the economy, though there has been a slowdown in October 2025. Sector-wide GGR dropped 3.4% to DKK 599m, attributed to a substantial year-over-year decline in sports betting revenue.
This was despite revenue from lotteries, online casinos and land-based casinos continuing to grow.
