Ontario lottery celebrates Olympic support ahead of Winter games

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) has launched a limited-time Olympics-themed ticket to coincide with the upcoming Winter Olympics.

The Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games will be hosted in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, this year, and OLG is one of the main partners of the Canadian Olympic team.

To celebrate its partnership, OLG has launched a Team Canada Quest for Gold Instant Ticket, which has a top prize of CA$250,000 (€774,800 / US$1m).

“Ontario’s Quest for Gold programme plays a key role in helping our athletes compete at the highest level,” said Neil Lumsden, Minister of Sport.

“We are proud to have partners like OLG who stand with us to champion Ontario’s high-performance athletes and elevate their journey as they prepare to represent our country at Milano Cortina.”

State lotteries the world over have a strong association with Olympic funding, providing financial support for athletes’ training and equipment – with the Olympics being an amateur tournament.

This practice is seen across countless countries, whether it be Sweden’s Svenka Spel’s support for the country’s ice hockey and skiing teams or the UK National Lottery’s support for various types of Olympic sports, though this has occasionally been a political issue in the case of the latter.

In Ontario, OLG works with the Canadian Olympic teams via the abovementioned Quest for Gold programme. The provincial lottery highlighted that 90% of Olympic media winners from Ontario received Quest for Gold funds.

“Giving back to Ontario and our communities is at the heart of what OLG’s lottery business is all about and it’s all thanks to our players,” said Duncan Hannay, President and CEO of OLG.

“Our lottery players have the unique opportunity to help support Ontario’s amateur athletes, including so many who work to achieve Olympic and Paralympic dreams.”

The 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics will take place between 6 February-22 February and 8 March-15 March, respectively.
