RECENT POWERBALL® RUN GENERATES $78 MILLION FOR TEXAS PUBLIC EDUCATION

Retailer commissions totaled more than $10 million during game’s historic run

AUSTIN — A record-setting Powerball® jackpot run in late 2025 generated an estimated $78.88 million for public education in Texas through the Foundation School Fund as the Grand Prize climbed to an estimated $1.817 billion – the second largest jackpot in game and U.S. lottery history. The jackpot reached that level following 47 consecutive drawings from Sept. 8 through Dec. 24, 2025 – when it was won by a single ticket sold in Arkansas – making it the longest jackpot run in Powerball history. During that period, the Texas Lottery recorded more than $207.5 million in total Powerball sales. In addition to benefiting public education, the run generated approximately $10.39 million in total retailer commissions across more than 19,000 Texas Lottery® retail locations statewide.

“While the jackpot-winning ticket was sold outside of Texas, this historic run highlights the important role the Texas Lottery plays in supporting public education,” said Courtney Arbour, executive director of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which oversees the Texas Lottery. “Extended jackpot runs like this one generate important funding for Texas schools, support our retailer partners and result in meaningful wins for players across the state.”

Texas Lottery Powerball players experienced numerous big wins throughout the historic run. A $1 million second-tier prize winning ticket was sold in Fort Worth for the Dec. 6 drawing and was claimed by a Keller resident. In addition, 93 tickets sold in the state matched four of the five white balls, winning $50,000 prizes, or up to $250,000 with the Power Play® add-on feature – totaling $6.85 million in third-tier prizes.

In 2025, 19 Texas Lottery players won Powerball prizes of $1 million or more, including a share of an estimated annuitized $1.787 billion jackpot won on Sept. 6, 2025, which was claimed by Seven Bridges Revocable Trust, of Fredericksburg.

In addition to contributions to public education and retailer commissions, 50 percent of Texas Powerball sales are allocated to prize expenses in accordance with game rules, and approximately seven percent supporting administrative costs.

Powerball Grand Prizes currently start at $20 million and roll until the jackpot is won. Players win the Grand Prize by matching five numbers from a field of 69 numbers and one Powerball number from a field of 26 numbers. By choosing Power Play® for $1 more per Play, players can multiply their non-Grand Prize winnings by two, three, four, five or 10 times*. A Power Play Match Five (5+0) prize is set at $2,000,000 regardless of the Power Play number selected. All other non-Grand Prizes will be multiplied by the Power Play number selected. (*The 10X Power Play multiplier is available for drawings in which the initially advertised annuitized Grand Prize amount is $150 million or less.) Drawings are broadcast each Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:12 p.m. CT.
