Carnival Cruise Line announces $1m daily lottery draw

In a unique case of cross-sector convergence, the lottery and ocean liner industries saw a respective first this week, initiated by the Carnival Corporation.

The Carnival Cruise Line has launched Carnival Millions, an interactive lottery with the top prize being $1m in a daily draw. Draws will be coordinated across various participating ships.

TimePlay, a Toronto-based interactive gaming company, provided the technological backing for the lottery using its interactive entertainment solutions. Tickets can be purchased using the Carnival HUB app once a passenger boards a ship.

“We are proud to lead the market in gaming innovation at sea,” said Marty Goldman, Senior Vice President of Global Gaming at Carnival Corporation.

“By linking our ships into one exciting lottery, we’re creating a shared sense of anticipation that goes beyond any single voyage.

“This experience gives every guest the opportunity to win a life changing jackpot, exactly the kind of fun and energy our guests love, and we’re thrilled to deliver it.”

Non-lottery companies or organisations getting involved in the practice are nothing new, with charities and businesses alike often running their own lotteries for fundraisers or staff entertainment.

It is also commonplace to see media outlets organise lottery operations. For example, the Health Lottery in the UK was for many years owned by Northern & Shell, the publishing company owned by Richard Desmond. The company also made a bid to run the National Lottery, losing to incumbent Allwyn in a contest prompting a legal battle.

The rules around companies running their own lotteries will differ from region to region and country to country, however. In the UK, for example, the Gambling Commission excludes private society lotteries or workplace-run lotteries from requiring a licence.

The licensing conditions around a cruise line, which will inevitably be crossing various international jurisdictions at any given time, running a lottery are a little more unclear.

One potential outcome could be that lottery draws will only take place when ships are in international waters, for example, to avoid clashing with any national regulatory requirements around lottery operations.
