Danske Spil reports record profit as lottery continues as biggest contributor

The lottery business continues to be a cornerstone of the Danish gaming market, and in 2025, it once again proved its importance for Danske Spil.

The state-owned operator reported its strongest financial results to date, with a record net profit in 2025 of DKK2.008bn (£232.2m), and lottery products drove the majority of revenue and profit while supporting large contributions to Danish society.

Lotteries remain the most significant business area for Danske Spil. In 2025, the company’s lottery division generated DKK3.011bn in revenue and DKK1.701bn in profit, making it by far the most profitable segment of the company’s portfolio.

Despite a slight decline compared with the previous year, mainly due to fewer large jackpots in games such as Eurojackpot, lottery products continued to attract strong player engagement across Denmark.

The company reported that more than 320 new millionaires were created through lottery prizes in 2025, highlighting the continued popularity of large jackpot games.

The lottery portfolio includes a range of well-known products, from traditional draw games to instant scratchcards and seasonal campaigns. Flagship draw games such as Lotto and Eurojackpot remained major traffic drivers, while scratch-based products under the Quick brand continued to perform strongly in retail channels.

Seasonal lotteries also played a role in maintaining engagement throughout the year. Holiday-themed products, particularly around Easter and Christmas, generated strong consumer demand and helped stabilise revenue during periods with smaller jackpot prizes.

Another long-standing product line, Klasselotteriet, delivered solid growth during the year. The subscription-based lottery reported double-digit revenue growth, supported by digital payment solutions and increased interest in recurring prize draws.

Danske Spil’s digitalisation

One of the most significant developments for lottery operations has been the rapid growth of digital participation. In 2025, approximately 70% of all Danske Spil sales were generated through online platforms, reflecting a clear shift in consumer behaviour.

Mobile apps and online platforms have made it easier for players to purchase lottery tickets, participate in recurring draws and receive notifications about jackpots or winnings. This transition, the business said, has also allowed it to gather valuable customer insights and implement responsible gaming measures more effectively.

However, physical retail outlets remain an important part of the lottery ecosystem. Physical stores across Denmark continue to act as key distribution points for scratchcards and draw-based tickets.

Beyond commercial performance, the lottery business plays a major role in supporting Danish society. As an 81% state-owned operator, Danske Spil distributes a large share of its profits to public initiatives.

In 2025, the company contributed over DKK3.1bn to society, including taxes, dividends and lottery funding. A substantial portion of these funds (DKK1.787bn) went to sports organisations, cultural institutions and community projects throughout Denmark.

The results are the first since Lars Krarup was elected as Chairman back in May 2025.

Looking ahead, lotteries are expected to remain the most stable and profitable segment of Danske Spil’s operations. While jackpot fluctuations can influence yearly revenue, the long-term demand for draw-based games and instant-win products remains strong, as the firm continues its digital expansion.
