Denmark Proposes New Restrictions on Gambling and Prediction Markets
Transforming Sports Advertising Rules
First, gambling commercials during live athletic events are a major objective of the complete reforms. These particular commercials are subject to a restrictive ban under the new regulations. For example, ten minutes before the start of an event, broadcasters are required to stop airing gambling ads. In order to resume them, they had to wait until ten minutes after the event concluded.
Furthermore, the legislation completely restricts live odds banners inside stadiums during live matches. Regulators also plan to aggressively restrict advertisements that appeal directly to young people. Consequently, betting companies cannot use famous public figures to promote their services anymore. These proactive steps aim to reduce the constant exposure fans face during major games.
Boosting Consumer Protection and Treatment
Besides marketing controls, the bill introduces much stronger consumer protection measures for all players. For example, operators can no longer offer free bets to welcome new customers. Furthermore, all gambling advertisements must clearly display visible risk warnings to inform players.
The government will also significantly increase funding to treat gambling addiction effectively. Officials are going to reinforce the ROFUS system in the meantime by improving vulnerable people’s options for self-exclusion. These new rules will be effectively enforced by the Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Gambling Authority. They will therefore have more precise authority to severely punish license holders who do not comply. These authorities will also take a far tougher stance against unlawful online gaming sites. The goal of these measures, according to regulators, is to make the environment much safer for everyone involved.
Addressing Prediction Markets and Future Steps
Currently, lawmakers are already working on the second part of these regulations. They officially call this upcoming set of rules Gambling Package 2. Importantly, this second package might introduce even more severe restrictions on the market. For instance, officials are seriously considering a complete ban on controversial prediction markets. However, regulators have not made a final decision regarding this specific measure yet.
According to Danish authorities, the gaming sector is changing very quickly these days. Regulators must constantly assess whether stricter regulations are necessary as new betting sites appear. On February 25, the Minister formally introduced these extensive revisions to the public. The new laws will go into effect on July 1st if Parliament approves Gambling Package 1. The changes in Gambling Package 2 are then planned to be quickly passed by lawmakers. If they succeed, those new regulations will go into effect on January 1, 2027. Denmark’s purpose is to create one of Europe’s safest gambling environments.
