Trump's State of the Union address drives $10.6M in prediction market trades
Prediction markets tied to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address drew more than $15 million in mention market contract purchases before the speech.
Kalshi said the event generated $11.97 million in lifetime volume across 391,165 trades, making it the most heavily traded single-speech prediction market event on record, as per DeFi Rate data. Meanwhile, Polymarket had more than $4 million across 22 markets.
Mention markets allow customers to buy contracts tied to specific words or phrases spoken during a live address. A contract pays out if the selected term is said. Several of the highest-probability outcomes listed prior to the speech were reflected in Trump’s remarks Tuesday night.
“250” anniversary reference
Kalshi had priced “250” at a 95% probability, tied to the upcoming 250th anniversary of the July 4, 1776, adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
During the address, Trump said, “Less than five months from now, our country will celebrate an epic milestone in American history, the 250th anniversary of our glorious American independence.”
He later added, “The revolution that began in 1776 has not ended. It still continues,” further reinforcing the anniversary theme that traders anticipated.
Sports, drugs and energy
Kalshi listed hockey (89%) and Olympics/World Cup (87%) among likely mentions. Trump recognized the men’s gold medal Olympic hockey team during the speech.
On drug policy — another tracked category — Kalshi had priced Fentanyl/Cocaine at 84%. Trump stated, “Deadly fentanyl across our border is down by a record 56% in one year.”
Polymarket markets included a 90% probability that Trump would reference “oil” or “gas” at least three times. In the speech, he said, “American oil production is up by more than 600,000 barrels a day,” and noted that natural gas production is at an all-time high.
Polymarket also listed a 92% probability that Trump would say “Middle East.” While he did not use the phrase verbatim in the excerpts reviewed, he discussed ceasefire negotiations in Gaza and regional diplomacy involving Israel and Iran.
Frequent use of “America”
The most popular Polymarket contract prior to the speech was for Trump to say “America” or “American” at least 25 times, drawing $145,746 in purchases and carrying a 95% probability.
Throughout the address, Trump repeatedly invoked the country’s name, including closing with, “God bless you and God bless America.”
Mentions of Biden and other figures
Polymarket priced a 39% probability that Trump would mention Biden at least 10 times, with $106,073 in handle. In the speech, Trump referred multiple times to “the Biden administration” and “my predecessor,” including stating, “The Biden administration and its allies in Congress gave us the worst inflation in the history of our country.”
Other markets tracked references to Israel/Gaza (92%), the Supreme Court (75% on Kalshi), and Minnesota/Minneapolis (69% on Kalshi). Trump referenced Gaza in discussing ceasefire efforts and cited Minnesota in alleging “an estimated $19 billion” in fraud.
The address took place as Gallup reported Trump’s approval rating at 36%, the lowest since he registered 34% during the final week of his first term.
For prediction platforms, the speech served as a high-liquidity event, with contract outcomes determined in real time based solely on whether specific words were spoken during the nationally televised address.
Kalshi’s SOTU mention markets opened on Jan. 9 with 25 contracts and kept adding through the speech day, finishing at 55. Traders had already placed $2.50 million ahead of the speech, which drew an increased $9.47 million on the day.
