There is a little-known rule in place that people might never realise when taking a chance on a scratch card at the checkout. People who make occasional purchases may never consider the possibility of breaking a rule that could see them turned away from potential cash prizes.
In a post on the National Lotto website, a spokesperson said: "Players are limited to purchasing a maximum of 10 Scratchcards per transaction. This is effective in all stores where you can play The National Lottery."
It adds: "A transaction is a purchase (which includes the purchase of Scratchcards) made during a single visit to a store. This is part of our commitment to ensure The National Lottery remains a trusted and safe environment for our retail players."
The 10-limit rule was introduced by operator Allwyn in October 2024 to promote responsible gambling. The measure aims to prevent excessive, impulsive, or addictive play, safeguarding customers by reducing the ability to buy large volumes instantly.
Scratch cards are a form of gambling, and a habit can quickly become an addiction that damages your health and finances. For confidential advice, information, and support, visit the Gamble Aware website here.
